Hybrid Car Batteries

How Likely is it to Hit YOUR Hip Pocket?

Hybrid car manufacturers are finally releasing some figures on hybrid car batteries and their chances of failing after their warranty has expired.

Both Honda and Toyota have battery fail rates of between 0.002 and 0.003. Few of the second generation Priuses have been driven past their warranty period but the failure rate is currently about 1 in 40,000. This data is for the US market which has the greatest number of hybrids on the road.

While the data at this point sounds promising, more relevant to hybrid drivers is what the actual hybrid battery replacement cost is. Installation of a new hybrid battery pack is roughly $900.

Hondas will be between $2000-$2500 for a hybrid battery depending on the model, and the Prius comes in at about $3000. So in total hybrid owners are looking at roughly a $3-4000 investment- not exactly a cheap service on your car!

So it is yet another figure to add to your sums when you make the big decision on whether to go with a hybrid vehicle! The good new is that it is expected that prices will substantially decrease as the hybrid battery industry matures and economies of scale are achieved through greater battery production.

Whether the battery failure rates stay at such a low level remains to be seen.
