Petrol Prices to Keep Hiking up

With petrol prices in Australia reaching $1.55 a litre for the first time, the prospects don't look rosy for commuters.

With increasing prices for food, housing as well as petrol, people are beginning to really feel the bite as wages fail to keep up with increases in the cost of living.

Crude oil has gone from $10 a barrel ten years ago to almost $120 today.
There are many factors at work, oil exploration and production are increasing in price, environmental regulations to minimise emissions are also expected to push up prices even further. Combined with the expanding markets of India and China, demand for petrol is continuing to increase despite environmental issues hitting the forefront in the last year.

It will be interesting to see what the threshold price is for Australians to actually get onto public transport or make the change to a more fuel-efficient car.
Let's see if our public transport systems can bear the load of 10-20 increases in passenger numbers!

Small Cars on show at Geneva Motor Show

Winding up this weekend the Geneva Motor show has given us an impressive array of green cars including electric cars, hybrids, diesel hybrids, diesel cars as well as hydrogen powered cars.

Not to be outdone are the small cars, particularly popular in European markets. With governments coming down on greenhouse gas emissions, car makers have seen that small cars, are affordable for buyers and with continuing improvements are reducing their carbon footprint as well as their running costs.

Australian Car Buyers Ignoring Climate Change

It seems that I'm not the only one to think that Australians are WAY behind the eight-ball when it comes to buying a new car.

The Melbourne Car Show at the moment has a vast array of what I call 'big boys toys', V8's and other 'super cars' which completely ignore the current state of crisis we are in concerning climate change.

This article from late last year, shows the buying trends to prove it. A vast difference to the surging hybrid car market in other parts of the world. That article coming soon...

Time to Set Emissions Targets

Economist Ross Garnaut who yesterday delivered the interim report on climate change suggested that Australia potentially faced the greatest dangers in terms of climate change, and its impact on key industries.
At the same time he also recognised the opportunities to work with other nations to improve the access and technology to deliver clean energy.

Australia has not yet firmly committed to a 2020 target for greenhouse emissions, which is required in order to meet the 2050 target of a 60 reduction in emissions. Currently this is the figure all involved nations are working with to avoid dangerous climate change.
Mr Garnaut's final report is due in September.

Hydrogen Hybrid 7 Series for BMW

The Hydrogen 7 bi-fuel car was launched today in Melbourne by BMW and could be the next step in the revolutionising of the car industry.

The car can run on either hydrogen or petrol with the performance remaining the same which ever 'mode' the car is in.

When the car runs on hydrogen it is emission-free making it an environmentally alternative mode of transportation in the future providing car makers can overcome some initial hurdles with the technology.

The BMW Hydrogen 7 will be on display at Federation Square from January 21st to 29th so get down there to check it out.
More on Hydrogen hybrid cars here.

Oscars Go Green

For an event as lavish as the Academy Awards, going green was no doubt going to be a talking point for the 2008 ceremony. Numerous green suppliers and services were utilised for the gala keeping Hollywood at the forefront of the green movement. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences worked diligently to reduce the ecological footprint of the event.

General Motors supplied a fleet of hybrid zero-emission vehicles to ferry production staff and stars to the show in a mix of Yukons and Prius'.

100 of the energy used for the telecast and the Governor's Ball was provided by wind power, as well as generators fueled by a mix that included bio-diesel fuels and reuseable or biodegradable items for the food service.

The suppliers extended all the way to recycled paper towel, tissues and napkins as well as Seventh Generation all-purpose cleaner for the cleanup after the show.
